William Dodd papers, 1777.

This collection includes seven autograph documents in Samuel Johnson's hand written on Dodd's behalf; eleven autograph letters from Dodd to Edmund Allen; and several transcripts of related documents in Allen's hand. It includes petitions and letters composed by Johnson to King George and Queen Charlotte, Henry Bathurst, Caroline Fitzroy, and William Murray; and additional letters from Anthony Chamier, Thomas Maxfield, and Abraham Winterbottom.

William Dodd (1729-1777) attended the University of Cambridge, and was ordained as a minister in 1752. He published a wide variety of works from 1747 onward, including poetry, a novel, theological writings, and his most successful work, The Beauties of Shakespeare (1752).
